The esthetic and functional impact of major cancer ablative surgery in the head and neck region can be devastating for the patient. In order to restore form and function and totally rehabilitate the patient, the efforts necessary require reconstruction of anatomic defects created by ablative surgery to restore esthetic appearance and physiological function. In addition to these means of rehabilitation, psychosocial and vocational counseling help through support groups and emotional counseling are necessary for complete recovery. However, in reconstructive surgery two basic issues need to be addressed adn they are esthetic and functional restoration. Examples of reconstructive efforts to restore esthetics include restoration of contour and appearance. Examples of functional restoration include speech, mastication, deglutition, and also restoration of oral competence for major surgery of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
